Welcome to the VIA Survey!
The VIA Survey, or VIA-IS, contains 240 questions designed to reveal individual character strengths. It takes about 30-40 minutes to complete. You will get an instant report of the full constellation of strengths, the top five signature strengths and a description of each strength.
The VIA Youth Survey is for young people, ages 9 – 17. It takes about 20 minutes to complete.
The Brief Strengths Test is the shorter version of the adult VIA Survey.
You have access to all surveys in our Survey Center.
Once you register, we will ask you to provide researchers with some basic demographic information. Please keep track of your user name and password so that you can refer back to the Survey Center whenever you wish.
The VIA Survey has been taken by nearly 1 million people around the world, and it represents the most scientifically validated tool available for measuring character strengths. It was created by Dr. Martin E. P. Seligman and Dr. Chris Peterson, along with other top scholars, and is the work of the VIA Institute on Character, an initiative of the Manuel D. and Rhoda Mayerson Foundation. A generous contribution from the Foundation allows the survey to be offered at no cost.
The Survey is offered online and only in select circumstances are paper versions provided. Contact the site administrator with any special requests.
